Introductions are always fun to do....
So I chose this picture because it has something to do with my research in games and education. I admire the analytical process and I feel that schools could be some of the best places to flourish creativity and critical thought. Unfortunately, with today's testing standards and drill for the funding educational practices, we're missing these opportunities. Students these days are learning less about their lives in schools and more in their private space, including video games. Video games themselves are rich environments where people learn how to communicate, see themselves in relation to their cultures and societies, and advance their bodies of knowledge simply on the principle of being interested in the content in front of their faces. Which brings you here, to my web o' space.
I study video games. I'm a doctoral student at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. I'm a member of the Games+Learning+Society research initiative. What I look at in particular is how first-person shooters help shape our cultural and civic identities. I also do game design work for several major universities throughout the United States and help run game design workshops for schools and educational conferences. My interests are in first-person shooters, game design, literacy practices in violent game spaces, the creation of multiple identities in game players, and fantasy football. Here you will find my perspectives on design work in the games industry, educational uses and practices using games and interactive technology, and my occasional run-ins with amazing content that I would like to share.
